Inspired by the Guerrero Negro salt flats in Baja California, Mexico, this set of sculptures represents my first foray into an ongoing exploration of salt as both a sculptural material and an agent of change for other materials. The sculptures that constitute the series are cubes of salt (amalgamated with a small amount of concrete) that are variegated through the use of copper, brass, steel, and wood. In each exemplar, the salt -locally sourced in Mexico- not only provides the structural base of the cube, but also affects the way that the texture and color of the other materials age over time. Recently, I have applied to artists´ residencies to continue this project with its inverse: using salt forms to variegate bases of wood, metal, and concrete cube forms.
